Pen-y-Fan

View Pen-y-Fan in a larger map

Last Thursday my father and I drove from our home in London across to the Brecon Beacons in Wales. Our aim was to pop over for the day and get a nice long walk in, contributing a 'mountain day' towards my Mountain Leader qualification. We headed towards Pen-y-Fan, the tallest mountain in the area, deciding to do a basic circle taking in three peaks and starting and finishing at the same car park.

It was a beautiful day when we arrived, just a couple of clouds in the sky. Throughout the day we saw a huge amount of people enjoying the beautiful Brecon Beacons, a large group of exhausted looking soldiers and a few lost dogs! Walking for nearly 5 1/2 hours we returned to the car tired but satisfied at a good day on the hill; our route is shown above. I'll upload and post some photos from the day later this week.

  1. Sounds like a good walk!

I'm off to the Brecon Beacons next Friday for a long weekend with friends and I quite fancied Pen - Y - Fan but Sugar Loaf is nearer and easier, which improves my chances of persuading some friends to join me on the walk. Or at least to drop me off and take me back to base again afterwards!

  2. It was great thanks Helen.

I'm sure you'll have a blast, as long as the weather holds - which it rarely seems to in Wales!
