Take a Leap and Push Yourself

Speaking from the small amount of experience and lack of years I have concerning adventure and pushing the limits I think a lot of people lack the will power and determination to follow through their aims and objectives in life. A lot of people make excuses (I'm sometimes one of these) or say that they just aren't able to do it due to skill or fitness etc. What i've found is that sometimes you just have to jump in at the deep end and push yourself beyond the limits you think you possess and discover that in fact you're able to do a hell of a lot more than you think!

I've always played a lot of sport and the willingness to get involved and just do something helps a huge amount, whether it's training for a rugby match or planning an adventure like the coast to coast. I might initially have been reluctant but once you start the enjoyment begins and you get to that match of rugby or that ride across the country and you get the biggest buzz ever; it's all worth it! Sometimes you just have to do something on a whim to find out more about it, such as whether you enjoy it or not. I randomly took up hockey a few years ago and enjoyed it, i took up guitar at a similar time and didn't! Until you try something then you'll never really know!

Mallory had no idea what he'd find at the summit of Everest or even climbing up it yet he was determined to keep going back and attempting it and Scott was determined enough to push the limits too far in his quest to reach the South Pole; the point being that it won't always end well (not necessarily death!) but you never know until you try. Generally an adventure or expedition will succeed with the right preparation and being sensible about what is possible whilst also trying to push the limits slightly!

Adventurers like Fiennes and Bonington have got to where they are today because they've pushed the limits, they've organised expeditions and just gone out and tried. They haven't made excuses or put things off and they are better off for it! It doesn't matter if it's Everest, a marathon or a charity bike ride; they all require effort (on different scales) and require you to just get up and do it!

No matter what ability level someone is, whether they aspire to be great or already are, they should take a leap, push themselves and take an adventure that they'll enjoy. Enjoyment might be organising it, doing it or after it (if the pain during was so great it might only be fun and rewarding afterwards).

To motivate the readers here is a quote from NFL legend Vince Lombardi, it's one of my favourites:

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, his greatest fulfillment of all he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Also, a quote from the great Winston Churchill:

We shall neither fail nor falter; we shall not weaken or tire...Give us the tools and we will finish the job.

I urge everyone to go out there, Take a Leap and Push Yourself! Adventure doesn't come easy or on a plate, you have to work for it and seek it out - when you do it's more than worth it, you'll experience things you'll never experience again and feel better than you ever thought possible. As Mallory said in reply to 'Why climb a mountain?', 'Because it's there'! Challenge yourself, Enjoy!
